Artists Ginny Elston and Susie Johnston find common ground through their respective research connected to age-old questions about ways of being and knowing, framed within contemporary modes of art practice.

In playing with appearances, and exploring the allure and representation of objects, their forthcoming exhibition Objects of Conviction places making and material interactions as vital to the emergence of knowledge. Both artists are engaged in working with and through a myriad of materials and objects, culminating in two new bodies of work that highlight the vitality of matter, embracing the liminal spaces between knowing and not knowing.

Ginny and Susie will take up a two-week period of intense making in the exhibition spaces at Patriohall prior to the exhibition opening, allowing for both collaborative methods of working with materials and each other, rejecting the imposition of pre-determined ideas and outcomes. Influenced by the work of social anthropologist, Tim Ingold, the artists embrace a ‘thinking through making’ approach to their respective practices and remain intentionally open to the unexpected, surprising, and not yet thought outcomes which arise in the making process.

Acknowledging that art operates within the realm of uncertainty and precarity they explore the collision of matter, metaphor and making, leading ultimately to porous and shifting flows of knowledge and meaning.
